Genral info of bus travel.

There are several types of buses: Express bus, ordinary sleeper bus and plain vanilla seated buses. For journeys less than 5-6 hours only seated buses are available. Journeys greater than 10 hours have both seated and sleeper and distances exceeding 15 hours or more have only sleeper buses available. Most sleeper buses have AC.

Long distance buses have beds top and bottom, of which the top bed is always 10% cheaper than the bottom one. Beds on Chinese buses were not built for comfort and it's not a good idea to bring many things on board with you.

Bus tickets are usually sold one day in advance and there at least two different bus stations in every city: one for local travel and another for long distance journeys. You should be aware which one you need. For this please check our city maps. It’s advisable to arrive at the bus station at least 40 minutes before departure.

Finally, arrival times by bus are notoriously difficult to predict as it all depends on the road condition at the time of your journey. Buses travel on average between 70 and 80kms/hour and stop only occasionally for meal and toilet breaks. If you’re a keen photo snapper or like to travel at your own pace, we recommend you hire a private car instead.
