Day trip to Shipton's
arch
Shipton's Arch lies about 55 kilometers outside of Kashgar and is estimated
to be the world's highest natural arch. It was discovered in 1947 by the
English mountaineer Eric Shipton while he was traveling between Tashkent and
Kashgar. It was reported by him in his book “Mountains of Tartary.” The arch
once figured in the Guinness Book of Records for its exceptional height, but
the editors of the book could not locate it exactly so the listing was
dropped. It was only as recently as May 2000 that an expedition sponsored by
National Geographic finally rediscovered the arch!
The height of the arch is unofficially estimated to be 457m,slightly higher
than the Empire State Building, with a span of roughly
54 m. It’s a 1.5 hour drive to get there through picturesque villages,
stopping for pictures along the way. For
the adventure traveler we have an exclusive trek to the arch itself. This
trip has some technical aspects that beg for someone looking for a
mountainous adventure. We have good experience and skilled tour guides for
this trip.
