General info of trains in China
Train travel in China is generally decent and most parts of the nation are now connected. Whilst it’s undoubtedly convenient to travel by rail, it can sometimes be difficult to obtain tickets at times of peak travel especially during holidays like May holiday from 1st to 7th of May, National day from 1st to 7th October and Spring Festival from 26th Jan to 2nd of Feb. Tickets can also be hard to obtain at the start of summer and winter vacations when students travel between home and school. Across China, train stations sell tickets 10 days in advance and if you know your departure time, we recommend you book your ticket earlier.
Types of Train
There are three different types of train in China: Express, fast and slow trains. Express train numbers always start with T, for example T98. Fast trains numbers begin with K, for example K888 and slow train numbers have no letter preceding them, for example 1044 or 1088. We recommend you take either an express train or a fast one.
Both express and fast trains have Air Conditioning (AC) and service is generally good. Though slow trains are much cheaper, there condition is not so good and most do not have AC.
Seats on Seats on the train
There are four different kinds of seats available:
1.Hard seater: Not very comfortable and we don’t recommend this for a journey of more than five hours. Hard seat wagons have 118 seats in them.
2.Soft seater: More comfortable than hard seater, though not always available.
3.Hard sleeper: Reasonably comfortable and the most popular form of travel amongst travellers. We recommend you take this one. Hard sleeper wagons have three beds: top, middle and bottom. Middle and bottom are often best. If the train is a double deck one, hard sleeper beds are only top and bottom – note that most trains in China are now double deck.
4.Soft sleeper: This is generally regarded as the best and most expensive option and only a few wagons per train are devoted to it. Soft Sleeper class is air-conditioned and wagons have four beds to a compartment with top and bottom available.
Foods on the train
All trains have a restaurant car in the middle of them, usually next to the soft sleeper wagon. Food is not as great as in a standard Chinese restaurant but tasty enough by most accounts. Food, drinks and snacks are on sale throughout the day from aisle trolleys making the rounds on the hour.
Be attention please
It’s important to note that like buses, all trains in China run on 24 hour Beijing time and not on local time as used in parts of China like Xinjiang. We strongly advise you get to the station a good 40 minutes before departure so as to check your baggage in and allow times for queuing (a staple of nearly all Chinese stations). Once on board, your train ticket is usually exchanged for a card, which is changed back once you arrive at your destination. You must keep your ticket with you at all times, for without it you will not be allowed to exit the train station on arrival.
